Co-founders Jenny Galluzzo and Gina Hadley started The Second Shift in 2014. Jenny is a former broadcast journalist and producer with Good Morning America and Plum TV. Gina had been a creative coordinator at Ogilvy & Mather and later a founder of two startups. As mothers of young children, they struggled with finding a work/life balance where they wouldn’t have to sacrifice one for the other. They also realized the multitude of other smart, talented women like themselves who shared the same dilemma, and how this demographic could serve the needs of employers in the new “gig economy.” So the friends teamed up with CFO Kemp Steib, a former director of investor relations and business development for private investment bank Allen & Company, to launch an online platform for executive-level temp jobs.
Job-seekers become members of The Second Shift’s network by uploading their resumes and answering short questions about their professional experience, strengths and interests. The Second Shift vets and matches each member to appropriate job listings from credible companies (from start-ups to corporate). The Second Shift also handles all the invoicing, tax documents and payments to the contractor once her gig is completed.
Integral to their mission is to provide women who have high-level skills and experience with more options to stay in the workforce, while giving employers a way to enhance their business goals and gender diversity with a ready pool of great talent. The service now has more than 1,500 women professionals across the US in its member network.
